I think the Daily 5 will be incorporated fairly easily although it may look different in each classroom. Calkins seems to focus a lot on Word Work, Read to Self, and Read to Someone which are all components of the Daily 5. Listening to reading will be helpful with the fluency aspect that Calkins mentioned in the overview. I read the last version of Calkins' reading and a lot of what she talked about and suggested reminded me of activities/components in the Daily 5.

We are using Calkins and Daily 5/Cafe and the structure of both seem to work very well together. During CAFE you are teaching strategies to help readers as well as conferencing with students to help them think about a goal to help them move forward with their reading. During Daily 5 we teach the students how to choose just right books and how to build stamina each day with their reading. Students also learn how to read with a partner so that they are working on real reading (comprehension).

I think that connecting Daily 5 and Caulkins can definitely be intertwined. On pgs. 4-5 when Caulkins suggests keeping charts of teaching points for students to refer back to, I was reminded of the CAFE Menu. Also, the goals of builiding stamina, independent reading, partner reading, conferences, etc. fit perfectly with the goals of Daily 5.

I think that they will mesh easily. The components are similar and in reading the overview I thought of a lot of things that we are already doing with Daily 5 that fit.

They do mesh well. I am curious about the time that she has talked about in her overview compared to the time that we currently have in our reading workshop. Something to wonder about..

I feel that Calkins and The Daily 5 blend together very well. Both Lucy and the Daily 5 use mini-lessons that lead right into independent practice. The vocabulary also overlaps--just-right books, etc. Both also use the read-to-someone time to deepen reading comprehension with the students.

Daily 5 and CAFE fit seamlessly together with Calkins, especially at the beginning of the year. Daily 5 provides a much more specific structure for developing your reader's workshop time, which is also great for visiting the expectations throughout the year. Calkins focuses a lot reading with partners, which can be integrated with read to someone perfectly.

Daily 5 and CAFE go hand in hand with Calkins. There are many strategies mentioned throughout the unit that are already on the CAFE menu. Each part of Daily 5 is also taught throughout the units as well. For instance, students work in partnership reading and that is a vital part of successfully using this resource.

Daily Five/CAFE will be fairly easy to incorporate. Both Calkins and Daily Five focus on partner reading and lots of partner talk to allow students to get their thoughts out. Most students have been taught to use a Book Bag or Book Box through Daily Five. Calkins also supports this practice.

I think this should be a smooth transition using Daily 5/Cafe will the Calkins materials. We have taught kids how to increase their stamina. I am curious how this will fit in with Calkins expectations (45 minutes by February) for stamina.

Calkin's will slide right in with what we are doing already with Daily 5 and CAFE. They both focus on a lot of the same things. I am still a little nervous about the 45 minutes-60 minutes of stamina.

Calkins's work seems compatible with the Daily 5 and CAFE. I don't see any reason why we wouldn't be able to merge them into a new whole that works for our students. I am anxious to see if our first graders can build their reading stamina up to 45 minutes by February!

I feel pretty confident that Calkins will work well with the Daily 5/Cafe components that we are already using. I think it will be easier for us to incorporate Calkins because we are already comfortable with Daily 5 and Cafe.
