Linda Hoyt read alouds should help teacher and student scaffold the focus for the month, for instance inferring that can be modeled and guided during this time.

The Linda Hoyt read alouds go in depth with the comprehension strategies. For example, unit 2-following a character. Hoyt touches on character studies and inferring in many of her lessons.

Linda Hoyt would fill need for teacher led read alouds like Calkins focuses on in a piece of her overview. She talks about using this time to model thinking and using the skills being taught. By using Linda Hoyt read alouds, we are using quality texts that meet the same needs Calkins calls for.

Read Alouds!!! These books are already matched to certain comprehension strategies and are ones that we know well if they have already been used in our lesson planning. They are stories with depth and will be good for modeling thinking.

Agreed, I feel that we should be able to pair units of studies with Linda Hoyt's interactive read-alouds and then use Lucy's suggested readings for strategy lessons or to serve the purpose of reading a plethora of pieces that fit into the unit of study. Hooray for it all melting together and being able to use materials consistently.

Yes ladies! As a team next year, we will be able to go deeper with our current resources and Hoyt's read alouds will work beautifully. I see us pulling out even more of her resources as we shift focus onto character study.

Linda Hoyt is a great resource for read alouds that target a specific comprehension strategy. The lessons are quick and easy to follow. Even some of the longer lessons can be broken down into segments over a week long period. Many of the read alouds are are Hybrid Nonfiction and Historical Fiction.

Linda Hoyt is an excellent resource for mentor texts across all genres. As stated already her lessons target specific comprehension strategies and provide a guide to think aloud modeling. Additionally, extra resources are available for fluency practice and writing about reading.

I personally use Linda Hoyt as a supplement for my reading mini lessons pretty frequently. I think it can still be used as a resource when teaching various comprehension strategies. Again, Lucy Calkins' units of study are going to mesh well with what we already have in place. I don't feel that any of the resources we are currently using are going to be replaced. They will continue to be used a supplemental materials for teaching those strategies listed in the units of study.
