It seems like Daily 5 would fit into this structure pretty easily. Our classes are already used to having a reading mini lesson, then independent work time (whether read to self, read to someone, etc.) To me, it feels like the balance of time spent on each area is the same with Daily 5 and Calkins.

I do feel like this curriculum will fit into the Daily 5 structure fairly well. Adjustments will have to be made to accommodate longer independent work sessions, especially later in the year. I'm hoping that as we dive into the units of study, we find that many CAFE strategies fit nicely as well.

The Daily 5 structures seems to fit well within the first Unit of Study. Since our students are familiar with these routines it won't feel like as big a change for us at the beginning of the year.
A point to think about is we will have to be more diligent in ensuring that other activities, or work does not cross into the students' time to read independently and/or with partners. Students will have to be allowed to use their literacy time for the Daily 5 activities.

As I continue reading and reflecting on the overview in smaller segments I am finding that Calkins has embedded points that directly connect to Daily 5 & CAFE. When she speaks of students dispersing to their special spots with baggies to read we refer to this as "bubble space" in Daily 5. In the same instance she is giving us a great lead in to posting the CAFE Menu when she discusses creating and posting abbreviated teaching points or strategies for students to refer back to after a mini lesson.
