This is a great opportunity for students to take the concept/skill being taught during our mini-lesson and applying it independently during Daily Five. Also, giving students time to discuss with their peers what they noticed about their own independent book. I have experienced this keeps students on task and I can hear their thinking.

The Cafe and Calkins go hand in hand. The Calkins minilessons go along with the comprehension check-ins with the Daily 5.

Daily 5 works well with the Calkins lessons. There is a daily mini-lesson, with time left for Daily 5 choices for students and Guided reading with the teacher.

It went hand-in-hand. We were able to incorporate almost all of the Cafe lessons with the Calkins lessons and still had time for three Daily 5 choices a day.

The Cafe lessons complement the Calkins lessons, giving the students more tools they can use while reading. When taught and reviewed during the mini-lesson, the Cafe lessons are beneficial to the students throughout their workshop time. The students are given three Daily 5 choices throughout the Reading Workshop.

I think Daily 5 and Cafe fit nicely with Lucy Calkins. The mini lessons will be a huge resource. It sounds like 2nd grade will really be focusing on fluency.

Both Daily 5 and Cafe strategies seem as though they will work well using this model. There are both comprehension and fluency strategies in CAFE, and Daily 5 allows for both guided and independent work. The Read to Someone rotation will continue to need a great deal of structure to be effective, but should help with the fluency emphasis.
Also, giving students time to discuss with their peers what they noticed about their own independent book. I have experienced this keeps students on task and I can hear their thinking.
