It inclues all aspects. Teachers are expected to meet with small groups, students are expected to read independently, meet with groups and meet with a partner to read together or to discuss their reading.

Calkins addresses all the aspects of a balanced approach in her plans. She emphasizes a reading workshop, read alouds, shared reading, phonics, and a writing workshop. These are all woven together seamlessly and complement each other to benefit the students.

The balanced literacy is very similar to what I'm doing now in reading workshop. I did notice a few changes. There is a lot more independent reading, I need to learn more ways I can keep my students accountable for their reading. It sounds like as the year goes on the reading workshop should get longer, I'm not sure how this will work with scheduling. Shared reading, I will need to gather more resources for this part of reading workshop. I need to focus more on phonics, I hope we can get a set plan in place for phonics work. I like all the partnerships! However, it will take time testing partners to see who works well together. Once the partnerships are established they will be a huge benefit to one another.
